Aaron Wan-Bissaka has given Ole Gunnar Solskjaer cause for second thoughts as Manchester United continue to target England defender Kieran Trippier this summer transfer window.
Having won the La Liga title with Atletico Madrid last season, before playing in England’s superb run to the Euro 2020 final, Trippier is on United’s radar this summer after they showed interest in him in January.
At first viewing, that pursuit might have seemed surprising given how Wan-Bissaka has performed since arriving at the club, for £50million, from Crystal Palace in 2019.
However, while the Londoner has been defensively sound, there remain question marks over his attacking output, while United didn’t have much competition for him last season.
As attentions turn to the August 14 curtain raiser with bitter rivals Leeds United, though, the 23-year-old continues to show some improvement going forward.
But it was his defending, once again, which took centre stage at United’s pre-season training camp in Surrey.
Taking part in another United pre-season training session – as they continue await the return of England stars such as Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford – Wan-Bissaka wowed the rest of his teammates and the coaching staff with a superb clearing header.
Along with Brandon Williams, he was part of the defending unit who attempted to stop in-demand Jesse Lingard.
In came a cross from the former West Ham loanee – and looked for all the world that Axel Tuanzebe was set to add the finishing touch.
Wan-Bissaka had other ideas, though, and produced a flying clearance with the back of his head as his teammates, and staff members, could be heard shouting ‘Yes Azza’ after he had done so.
