Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ first words as Roma player as Arsenal confirm opening transfer of window – football.london – Football.London

Ainsley Maitland-Niles has expressed his delight to join AS Roma on a loan deal until the end of the season.

The 24-year-old had made just eight appearances for Arsenal in the Premier League this season and has now decided to venture elsewhere in order to play more regular football.

Maitland-Niles will now play under Jose Mourinho in Rome and has shared his excitement to get going in the Italian capital.

He said to Roma’s official website : “I am delighted to be here and can’t wait to crack on. I want to help the team and show what I can do as a player.

“Thank you to the fans for the support they’ve already shown me – I hope we can go on to do something great by the end of the season.”

Roma’s general manager, Tiago Pinto, added: “With Maitland-Niles, we are bringing to Roma a young player who fits well with the profile we were looking for to improve the squad and cover a number of different positions.

“When we spoke to Ainsley we were really struck by his enthusiasm about the prospect of joining our group and having the chance to work with Jose Mourinho.”

Maitland-Niles was close to leaving Arsenal over the summer, but had a chat with Mikel Arteta who reassured him that the midfielder was part of his plans.

However, that has proved not to be the case. Maitland-Niles, when speaking to the Telegraph in June 2021, admitted it could be time to say farewell at the Emirates Stadium.

“I want a decision. I want some clarity and then hopefully I can get to work with whoever I need to get to work with,” he said.

“Whether that is finding a new club or whether that is carrying on with my training. I would like some kind of indication of what is happening.

“Where they [Arsenal] see me. If it works out it works out, if it doesn’t then kiss Arsenal goodbye. It’s been a long journey but a proud one at that.

“Maybe they still want to do something and things could change. If not, there are always other teams. It would be easier to do it now than waiting for pre-season to kick in and everything is super busy.

“And they can’t answer their phones because they are doing too much work. You know how the football world works.”

Maitland-Niles could make his Roma debut on Sunday afternoon against Juventus.
