Alan Shearer says Arsenal players have delivered verdict on Arteta’s Aubameyang decision – Football.London

Alan Shearer has praised Mikel Arteta for making such a big decision in stripping Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from the Arsenal captaincy.

The Gabon international hasn’t played since a recent disciplinary breach that ended up with him being relieved of his duties as Arsenal‘s foremost leader.

It caused a divide amongst the fan base at the time, but after four wins on the bounce without Aubameyang in the Premier League, Arteta’s decision has been somewhat vindicated.

That’s the opinion of Shearer anyway.

“It was a big, brave decision from Arteta to do what he did because with a personality, who Aubameyang was, the captaincy on the salary that he’s on,” he said on BBC Match of the Day.

“But he has to show discipline because he’s got a young team who he’s trying to send a message to. They now know that they can’t mess around; they can’t be late for training or whatever the situation is.

“And the players agree with the decision that Arteta’s made. Because you can tell in their performances. Arteta needed his players to back him up in terms of giving him the goals, giving him the performances and they’ve done that in style.”

Aubameyang’s immediate future at the Emirates has been questioned ever since he was dropped and his exit is a very real possibility.

Yet the Gunners have shown that they can do just fine without him.

Their latest result came against Norwich City on Boxing Day as double from Bukayo Saka, as well as goals from Kieran Tierney, Alexandre Lacazette and Emile Smith Rowe capped off a very enjoyable 5-0 win for the Gunners.

Three points ensured that they will be in the top four by the time the new year comes and they’ll be hoping to continue that form in January – with or without Aubameyang.
