“The next one is yours…”
Following games against Derby County and QPR, it marked a step up in class for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his side, who are still without the majority of their Euro 2020 stars.
In the absence of Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford – among others – this latest clash presented an opportunity for some of his ‘fringe’ players to shine.
Academy graduate Anthony Elanga and Pereira did exactly that with well-taken goals.
Indeed, the strike from Pereira was worthy of any competitive match, let alone a summer outing, as United put in the hard yards ahead of their Premier League kick-off against bitter rivals Lees United on August 14.
Despite that goal and a well-rounded display, though, it’s fair to say that the Brazilian has fallen down the pecking order when it comes to free-kicks and other set-pieces.
One of his attempts was so wayward, it’s even forced Pereira into issuing an apology!
Posting a series of stories on his Instagram profile, the 25-year-old tagged Juan Mata and promised the Spaniard – who appeared less than impressed as he stood behind Pereira during his failed attempt – he can jump ahead in the queue next time around.
In a caption that featured two ‘laughing face’ emojis, Pereira addressed his 2.3million followers and said: “The next one is yours. Your face says it all.”
