With the start of the 2021/22 Premier League campaign now just five weeks away, the Gunners are in a race against the clock to try and get as many new signings over the line as possible ahead of their opening day clash with newly-promoted Brentford.

Although the Gunners, who face Scottish outfit Hibernian in their pre-season opener on Tuesday evening, are yet to complete their first signing of the summer, they are working hard behind the scenes to get deals over the line.

It is understood that Benfica left-back Nuno Tavares is poised to be the club’s first new recruit of the summer, with Anderlecht ace Albert Sambi Lokonga expected to follow suit.

As well as looking to land those two, the Gunners have also rekindled their interest in Lyon sensation Houssem Aouar.

Arsenal’s first summer signing Nuno Tavares has revealed the role that Arteta and Edu played in him choosing to come to the Gunners.

“Mikel and Edu helped me so much. They speak with me every time, and call me and I feel people want me here. I like that because I need this power and I’m so grateful for this.”

Aouar message

Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar has appeared to play down speculation that a move to Arsenal is imminent.

On Friday afternoon, an image was shared on Instagram, believed to be Aouar’s agent and brother in London, fueling rumours that he could be close to joining the Gunners.

However, Aouar has since played down those prospects of a deal being close, saying: “Guys leave him. He is one of my best friends not my real brother. By the way… not my agent also.”

Locatelli decision

Amid Sassuolo chief Giovanni Carnevali confirming that an unnamed overseas club are in ‘advanced talks’ to sign Manuel Locatelli, the Italy midfielder’s feelings towards a move to Arsenal have been revealed.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Locatelli is not against a move to the Emirates Stadium, despite favouring a move to Juventus.

I can confirm that Arsenal want Locatelli, they consider him a perfect player for Arsenal and the Premier League.

But at the moment Arsenal have a smart strategy with Locatelli, the only one they can have in this situation.

So they are waiting to see what happens with Juventus, because the player’s priority is Juventus.

Locatelli wants to join Juventus, but he isn’t refusing Arsenal, he has the dream of playing Champions League football and joining Juventus because he is Italian.

Pjanic battle

Arsenal are set to go toe-to-toe with north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the battle to sign Barcelona midfielder Miralem Pjanic on loan, according to Catalan media outlet Diario Sport.

Barcelona are desperate to reduce the size of their wage bill this summer and they believe allowing Pjanic to head out on loan will be a suitable step towards making that possible.

Both north London clubs are interested in his signature meaning a tasty transfer battle could be on the cards.

Although Arsenal are yet to confirm a new signing this summer, they have successfully managed to tie young goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo down to a new long-term contract.

The deal was announced yesterday and the Gunners are hoping that him putting pen to paper on a new deal will be just the start of positive announcements that they have to make.
