Arsenal press conference LIVE: Arteta on Partey return, injuries and Tottenham – Football.London

Hello and welcome to live coverage of the Arsenal press conference ahead of the huge North London Derby against Tottenham Hotspur.

Gunners manager Mikel Arteta is set to face the media this afternoon where he will be previewing the fixture at the Emirates Stadium as his side aim to build on the impressive 3-0 win over Brentford before the international break and retain top spot in the Premier League table.

Of course, a fixture like this needs little introduction but based on events from the last time these two rivals met back in May, the Spaniard is sure to be quizzed on his relationship with Spurs boss Antonio Conte and what lessons have been learned from the 3-0 reverse.

In addition, Arteta should provide an update on the injury and fitness front. During the international break, Thomas Partey, Kieran Tierney, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Kieran Tierney all returned to London Colney earlier than expected whilst Oleksandr Zinchenko has been struggling with a calf muscle problem.

This week also brought about the unfortunate news that Emile Smith Rowe has undergone surgery amid experiencing discomfort in his groin and will therefore miss the North London Derby. So there might be more messages of support for the 22-year-old from the Arsenal boss.

You can hear what Arteta has to say on all these issues with football.london‘s Arsenal writer Kaya Kaynak in the live blog below.

Arsenal team news

Mikel Arteta has delivered the latest Arsenal team news ahead of the North London Derby against Tottenham Hotspur.

Thomas Partey, Kieran Tierney and Takehiro Tomiyasu have emerged as injury doubts after returning from international duty earlier than expected. Furthermore, there have been concerns over Oleksandr Zinchenko’s fitness after he missed the 3-0 win against Brentford with a calf muscle problem.

As expected, Arteta was asked for an update regarding his squad when he faced the media in a pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon and whilst in typical fashion, he didn’t give too much away, he did confirm the aforementioned players took part in a training session beforehand.

We just finished the last training session. We had many players arriving yesterday we had a short period to prepare the match but the boys look in good condition.

Arteta on Smith Rowe’s surgery

We had to make a decision and we could not continue with that uncertainty. The player was the first one demanding that he wanted an end decision and then we have to support him on that.

Saliba doubts?

No this is football and Willy has shown what he’s capable of in the past few months. I have no doubts on him.

Timeframe for Smith Rowe’s return

After a surgery it’s very difficult to give a timeline. We need to go step by step. We know before the World Cup he’s not going to be involved.

Gabriel Jesus admission

Arsenal star Gabriel Jesus has admitted that the north London derby against Tottenham is “all” his teammates are talking about.

All the players are talking about the derby. It’s all about the derby. ‘You’re going to see what a derby is. Derby, derby’.

I’ve had some experience of derbies, like when I played for Palmeiras, City and Brazil. So, I know what a derby is, but I never played one Arsenal versus Tottenham here. So, it will be my first and I hopefully to get the win, not only in my first but all the derbies that I will play.

North London Derby predictions

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has delivered his North London Derby prediction and he is in agreement with BBC pundit Chris Sutton.

This is a game that never lets you down. There are certain other games in the Premier League calendar where we build them up and they disappoint, but that is never the case with this fixture.

The way they’re playing at the moment, I don’t see Tottenham being able to beat Arsenal. They did defeat Leicester by a 6-2 margin the other day, but the scoreline flattered them in my opinion. Son Heung-Min hasn’t done well when he’s started games so far this season, and Antonio Conte might use him as an impact player to turn to on the bench.

Are Arsenal title contenders? I’ll be able to answer that question after they play Liverpool next week. There’s no point in winning one big game and losing the next one. Arsenal lost to Manchester United and they now have two big games which they need to win.

Conte mind games?

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte refused to reveal which players in his squad are struggling with injuries ahead of the North London Derby against Arsenal.

Honestly I don’t want to speak about the injury because I don’t want to give advantage to Arsenal, yeah?

But for sure we have to face some problems, some physical problems and we have to know also that we have just started to play the first game in a run that we have to play 13 days in 43 days. For sure we have to try to make the best solution and to try not to take big risks because if we take big risks and lose players for the rest of the games, it will be a disaster.

Partey replacement?

Mikel Arteta will want all his best players available to him, but there is still some doubt over Thomas Partey.

football.london understands that Arsenal have been assessing the Ghana international at London Colney in recent days, and are hopeful of having them fit for Saturday’s crucial match.

However, if Partey is unavailable it raises a familiar question for the Gunners and his replacement might not necessarily be Albert Sambi Lokonga.
