Arsenal are pushing hard to sign Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, football.london understands.
The Gunners switched their attentions to a homegrown alternative for Bernd Leno several weeks ago, after initially making contact with the representatives of Ajax shot stopper Andre Onana.
Sheffield United value Ramsdale at around £30million and in a meeting between club officials last week the Gunners had made clear that they would not pay the figure United were asking for.
However, United are keen on recouping a transfer fee for Ramsdale this summer with a deal now more likely than ever to happen.
Sources close to Sheffield United have told football.london that a deal is likely to be reached for a fee in excess of £20million, with achievable add-ons increasing the eventual fee.
Mikel Arteta’s side had two previous offers rejected for the 23 year old following his return from Euro 2020 duty with England.
“It’s natural he wants to be a Premier League player,” Sheffield United boss Slavisa Jokanovic said on Tuesday.
“I am talking with him, he believes it can be a good move for himself but it is not a bad thing for him if he stays with us – he is a talented English player and I understand Arsenal are interested, but this is the business.
“If he is one of the best players in the league his price is high and it’s up to Arsenal if they want to pay the money – I don’t want to sell, but I understand the business side of the club and Aaron too .
“If my word is last I will say no but I have to understand the position of the club. Aaron doesn’t have my permission to leave but I understand the situation
“I will be disappointed [if he leaves] but it’s part of the realistic situation – Arsenal is pushing from one side and I am pulling from a different side. It’s part of the work they have more tools than me I cannot pay his contract with this transfer right now.
“I am thinking about him as a Sheffield United player and we need to recognise that interest exists I will be more satisfied if this guy stays but if it doesn’t happen I will wish him all the best
“If you ask me if I want him to leave no. Right now he is a United player. It will depend on our club and Arsenal too because they are pushing for him but at this moment there is no change.”
Meanwhile, the Gunners are looking to make more signings before transfer deadline day on August 31.
