Arsenal’s two main alternatives to Dusan Vlahovic are Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Alexander Isak, according to recent reports.
The Gunners are in desperate need of a centre-forward given Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah are into the final six months of their respective contracts at the Emirates Stadium.
To further complicate things, the future of fellow-frontman Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang appears to be in doubt and football.london understands that Arsenal are now open to offers for the Gabon international, who was relieved of his captaincy duties last month following a disciplinary issue
According to The Athletic, the Gunners are in the ‘strongest position’ out of any clubs attempting to sign Vlahovic in the January transfer window but north London is also said to not be the Serbian international’s preferred destination.
Still, the report also names Real Sociedad star Isak and Everton ace Calvert-Lewin as the club’s alternatives if they are unable to convince the 21-year-old to join Mikel Arteta‘s project.
The Toffees frontman has struggled with injuries this season, featuring just four times in the Premier League, netting three goals in the process.
The former Sheffield United forward enjoyed an extremely productive 2020/21 campaign, finding the back of the net 16 times in the English top-flight – a hugely impressive record considering none of those were penalties.
Meanwhile, Isak has had somewhat of a quiet season in Spain, scoring just four times in 16 La Liga outings, although he has also scored three times in the Europa League this term.
The Sweden international is still just 22 years old, with his impressive hold-up play and ability to take players on making him a perfect fit for Arteta’s current 4-2-3-1 system.
The youngster’s countryman and footballing icon Zlatan Ibrahimovic has previously hailed Isak’s talent, admitting back in 2016 that his compatriot was a top player.
Issuing his verdict on Isak’s talents, Ibrahimovic said: “I have seen him in action and he is fantastic.”
