Tottenham have been offered the chance to sign Frenchman Antoine Griezmann from Barcelona this summer, with the Spanish club becoming more desperate in trying to offload the forward.
Griezmann is one of a select number of players who the Catalan giants are actively trying to get rid of to help ease their financial worries.
It had looked certain that the 30-year-old was to reunite with former boss Diego Simeone at Atletico Madrid, but the latest reports are that the move which involves a part-exchange of midfielder Saul Niguez is now off due to financial reasons.
But as L’Equipe have reported via Get French Football News (GFFN), the French forward is reportedly only keen on a return to the Wanda Metropolitano-based club if he was to leave Barca this summer.
A member of his entourage told the French outlet: “Antoine is not ready to accept any conditions to leave, simply because Barcelona find themselves in a complicated situation [financially].”
This comes as a blow to the Catalan giants, who may be forced to rekindle talks with the Madrid-based club to help grant Griezmann’s wishes, and at the same time get him off the club’s financial books.
Meanwhile, the Frenchman’s huge salary remains a sticking point for any potential suitor.
Nevertheless, the Spanish side’s act to offer the services of the 30-year-old to the north Londoners could come as big help to Fabio Paratici and co.
It is well known that Spurs are looking to sign a new forward to help share the burden with Harry Kane next season, and the Frenchman could be the perfect player to do just that, especially with his pedigree at the top level.
Griezmann made a total of 51 appearances last season for the Spanish club, scoring 20 and assisting 13, and as a result of his impressive goal return over the years, has been labelled by his national team manager Didier Deschamps as potentially ‘one of the greatest players ever’.
“He’s a professional and he’s managed to avoid the different injuries that he could have had,” the French manager said. “The statistics speak for themselves.
“You can see the influence that he has for the French national team, through the goals that he scores, through his assists.
“If we then add to that the capacity that he has to change the game, to get stuck in when we need to defend when we don’t have the ball, he’s one of the greatest players of all time, both in Europe and worldwide.”
An impressive goal return which could add the extra firepower required to Nuno Espirito Santo’s new look Tottenham side, who will be aiming to achieve a top-four finish in the upcoming 2021/22 Premier League season.
Whether the 30-year-old can be convinced to move to another club other than Atleti remains to be seen, but the opportunity is there for Fabio Paratici to explore this avenue ahead of a potential transfer swoop this summer.
Even if Espirito Santo’s side are unsuccessful in an attempt to sign Griezmann, there are other options that are being targeted by the club.

Southampton striker Danny Ings is another candidate who the hierarchy are keeping a close eye on, especially as the 28-year-old only has 12 months left on his current Saints deal.
