Ben Chilwell was full of praise for Romelu Lukaku after the Chelsea striker helped his side secure a much-needed win against Aston Villa.
Lukaku, 28, didn’t start the game in the West Midlands as Thomas Tuchel believed that he didn’t have the ability to complete the full 90 minutes.
After a rather toothless first-half performance, Lukaku’s introduction changed the complex of the game as the Blues were able to regain control in the attacking sense as they had that main focal point up top – something that was absent in the first half with Christian Pulisic looking lost at times in the number 9 position.
It only took 11 minutes for the 28-year-old to make his mark after he was on the end of Callum Hudson-Odoi’s accurate cross to steer a header past former Arsenal man Emiliano Martinez in the 56th minute.
Alongside many cute passes that nearly resulted in Chelsea goals for Marcos Alonso and Mason Mount, respectively, the £97.5million man took matters into his own hands in the dying embers as he bulldozed his way through the defence to win a penalty.
Jorginho converted to wrap up up a wonderful second-half display for the title challengers – who have reignited their quest for the English crown – with a 3-1 win.
It is now hoped Chelsea’s number 9 will kick on from here, with Brighton up next in his sight as he looks forward to hopefully putting a goal-scoring streak together.
In the aftermath of the win, the limelight was rightfully on Lukaku and the currently-injured Chilwell was full of praise with his own three-word verdict to his teammate’s second half masterclass.
He tweeted on his account @BenChilwell: ‘Cant stop rom!’
Lukaku himself told Sky Sports: “I think I needed a performance like this today. It’s been difficult like you know getting the end of the game.
“Every footballer wants to be on the pitch. The manager has his reasons but I kept working hard. It’s a good win and personally for me I’m happy with my performance and now we push on.”
