Arsenal’s new defender Ben White has admitted he was impressed with Hale End graduate Bukayo Saka after playing alongside the youngster in England training.
White was announced as the Gunners’ third signing of the summer, following Benfica fullback Nuno Tavares and Belgian midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga, who joined from Benfica and Anderlecht respectively.
The 23-year-old will wear the famous number four at the Emirates Stadium next term, a number that has previously been donned by Arsenal icons Patrick Vieira, Per Mertesacker and Cesc Fabregas.
White, who signed a long-term deal with the north London club, admitted how impressed he was with Saka when the pair trained together for Gareth Southgate’s side this summer.
“So I had a bit with Bukayo over the summer,” White told Arsenal’s official website.
“I hadn’t seen much of him before then and he really surprised me how talented he is.
“[I didn’t train against him a lot] but some of the other boys did. He’s so sharp and I was really surprised how good he is.”
Saka was awarded the Gunners’ Player of the Year award after notching six goals and ten assists across the 2020/21 campaign, an impressive feat considering he is still just 19-years-old.
White also admitted that he jumped at the chance to become Saka’s teammate this summer, claiming that playing for manager Mikel Arteta greatly excites him
“I don’t think I needed too much convincing to be fair”, he told Arsenal’s website.
“Obviously, Arsenal speaks for itself and I spoke to the gaffer a number of times during the summer. I got good vibes and the way the gaffer wants to play, I think I can produce quality in this team and hopefully get Arsenal back.”
