Manchester United are on the verge of signing Raphael Varane for £35million plus add-ons, according to various reports.
Varane, who has recently entered the final 12 months of his contract at Real Madrid, is now close to signing for United after the two clubs agreed a £35million fee for the France international.
After weeks of speculation, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to have got his man, which is incidentally coming at the same time as Arsenal are set to sign Ben White from Brighton.
Plenty has been said about White’s price being too expensive after just one season in the Premier League and with Varane seemingly moving to Manchester for around £15m less (excluding add-ons), inevitable comparisons have been made.
Some United supporters believe their imminent signing of Varane is the better deal, but it’s safe to say a selection of Arsenal fans disagree.
White, 23, has been tipped by his Brighton team-mate Adam Webster to carry on his progression and is not shocked by the likes of Arsenal coming in for his signature.
Webster told talkSPORT : “He’s got so much ability and so much potential.
“He’s still only 23, so he’s still got a lot of years ahead of him.
“To do what he’s done, every year he’s kicked on and progressed, from League One to Championship and then last year in the Premier League and playing for England.
“He takes it all in his stride and nothing fazes him. It doesn’t surprise me.”
The England defender is set to become Arsenal’s third summer signing after Nuno Tavares and Albert Sambi Lokonga were confirmed as Gunners players in recent weeks.
Mikel Arteta and Edu are still set to have a busy summer with the north London club looking for a squad overhaul before the window slams shut at the end of next month.
