Carrick hails Fred as he prepares for Copa America final – United In Focus – Manchester United FC News

Manchester United midfielder Fred is preparing for the Copa America final with Brazil.

They will take on bitter rivals Argentina in the match at the Maracana, which kicks off at 1am (UK time) tomorrow.

Ahead of the game, Michael Carrick paid tribute to Fred in an interview with the club’s website.

“It’s terrific for Fred, full credit to him, he’s worked ever so hard,” said Carrick.

“He’s such a great personality and character. He’s had to work hard here to establish himself.

“It’s a huge game obviously in that part of the world and hopefully he can do what he’s been doing, win a trophy as well and we can have four boys coming back with a spring in their step ready to hit the season hard.”

The affection is clearly mutual as Fred called Carrick his mentor in March last year.

International success would give Fred confidence

Plenty has been said about the need for this United side to win their first trophy under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Europa League final loss in May obviously saw United miss a chance to do that but Fred has the chance to win a major trophy with his country.

That would give him confidence and should give him that taste for success as well as the knowhow on how to get over the line in important competitions.

Of course, by tomorrow night, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Marcus Rashford could also have a major international trophy to their names.
