Mourinho makes Chilwell statement
Former Tottenham Hotspur head coach has insisted that Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell must start for England in their Euro 2020 opener against Croatia on Sunday.
Chilwell is in competition with Manchester United’s Luke Shaw to nail the left-back berth, with Gareth Southgate facing a very difficult call.
For Mourinho, though, Chilwell should get the nod.
He said: “Left back I would go with Chilwell, I wouldn’t think twice.
“I know that he plays normally at Chelsea with five [in defence] but he is intelligent, he covers the space and the diagonals inside very well.
“He is dangerous in attack, he is good in the air, he is good at set-pieces, he can defend well the possible long build-up from Croatia in the first phase.”
