Good evening and welcome to live coverage of Thomas Tuchel’s post-match press conference after today’s 2-2 draw against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge.
The pre-match discussion was all centred around Romelu Lukaku and the Belgian striker was left out of the match-day squad by Tuchel following his controversial interview with Sky Italia that was released this week.
That decision was a big one from the German, who started Kai Havertz in place of Lukaku. For much of the opening period, Tuchel may have been second-guessing himself.
Liverpool took an early lead when Sadio Mane, who was perhaps fortunate to be on the pitch after clashing with Cesar Azpilicueta, rounded Edouard Mendy to score. Mo Salah then doubled the visitors’ lead with an excellent finish after poor marking from both Antonio Rudiger and Marcos Alonso.
At that point, frustration was the overriding emotion inside Stamford Bridge. Yet that changed to jubilation inside of five minutes as Mateo Kovacic and then Christian Pulisic hauled the Blues level at the break.
The second period was equally as breathtaking with both sides pushing hard to find a winner. However, due to a combination of excellent goalkeeping from Edouard Mendy and Caoimhin Kelleher, neither could and the contest ended level.
After a difficult few days, Tuchel will be pleased with the effort shown by his players. We will get his reaction to tonight’s game and the latest on Romelu Lukaku in his post-match press conference.
