Good afternoon and welcome to our live coverage of Thomas Tuchel’s post-match press conference after Chelsea’s pre-season victory over London rivals Arsenal.
The game was the Blues’ third official friendly of the summer and Tuchel named a strong starting XI, which included the likes of Kai Havertz, Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech. And the two German stars combined for Chelsea’s opener.
A counter-attack was led by Werner and he was able to slide the ball across the box for Havertz. The scorer of the Blues’ Champions League final winner was clinical and he rasped a shot beyond Bernd Leno.
Chelsea played with great energy and purpose in the opening 45 minutes and almost had a second when Ziyech directed a shot across goal with the outside of his boot. Unfortunately for the Morocco international, the ball rebounded off the post.
Tuchel rotated his side at the interval and throughout the second period; no player that started the game completed it.
That was perhaps why the second period was a little more disjointed and why the Blues’ marking was poor for Granit Xhaka’s equaliser.
However, minutes after Arsenal drew level, they presented Chelsea with an opportunity to reclaim the lead. Hector Bellerin played an awful pass across the penalty area, Tammy Abraham collected and curled his finish beyond Leno.
There were plenty of positives for Tuchel to take from the performance, although given the amount of gesticulating he did on the touchline, there were definitely things the Chelsea head coach will want his side to improve on during the remainder of pre-season.
We will have the German’s post-match thoughts below and a full transcript of his press conference on the football.london website shortly.
