Chelsea press conference recap: Thomas Tuchel on slipping title chances, Reece James injury blow – Football.London

Chelsea were held to a 1-1 draw by an incredibly impressive Brighton outfit to lose mkore ground to Manchester City in the race for the Premier League title.

Tuchel made four changes to the side that beat Aston Villa on Boxing Day, with Mateo Kovacic. Andreas Christensen, Cesar Azpilicueta and Romelu Lukaku all coming into te starting lineup.

There was a tactical tweak as well from the Blues head coach as Reece James lined up at left wing-back, with perhaps Liverpool and Mo Salah on Sunday in mind, with Christian Pulisic stationed on the right of the back five.

But also, James was tasked with dealing with the lightning quick Tariq Lamptey, who left Chelsea prior to the 2020/21 season to join the Seagulls with James standing in his way of a starting berth in SW6.

The home side went ahead just before the half hour mark when Lukaku marked his return to the starting lineup with a powerful header past Robert Sanchez from Mason Mount’s corner.

Just a couple of minutes beforehand though, the Blues were dealt a huge blow when Reece James limped off, barely able to put any weight on his left leg in what is a major concern for Tuchel ahead of Liverpool on Sunday.

The second half was almost one-way traffic for the entirety – from Brighton. They absolutely dominated the home side, who were hanging on for almost the whole of the second period but looked to have somehow clung on.

That was until substitute Danny Welbeck popped up with a 92nd minute equaliser from Marc Cucurella’s cross to earn a very deserved share of the problems and leave Chelsea counting the cost of yet more points dropped at home.

We will be hearing from Thomas Tuchel shortly and you can follow what he has to say with us via the live blog below.
