Edu issues one-word verdict after Arsenal frustrate Liverpool in Carabao Cup semi-final – Football.London

Arsenal’s technical director Edu was left ‘wowed’ by his side’s performance in their goalless draw with Liverpool on Thursday evening.

The Gunners spent the majority of the Carabao Cup semi-final first-leg clash with a man less than the hosts at Anfield after Granit Xhaka was sent off in the first-half for a last-ditch challenge on Diogo Jota.

Despite having a man less than the usually rampant Liverpool, Arsenal defended resolutely, with Mikel Arteta‘s altered game-plan being executed to perfection on Merseyside.

The north Londoners now go into next week’s second-leg with the home advantage and will be boosted knowing they have what it takes to shut the Reds’ attack out.

Edu, taking to social media after the match, was left stunned by what he saw from the Arsenal players and travelling supporters at Anfield.

The Brazilian’s Instagram story read: “Wow!!! What commitment from our players!!! Wow!!! What atmosphere from our fans!!! This is the way!!!”

Arsenal players have often been criticised in the past for not showing enough fight, especially against the top teams in the division, like Liverpool, but the Gunners demonstrated that in abundance on Thursday night.

Arteta, when speaking to the press after the draw, lauded the spirit he saw from his team despite facing adversity when Xhaka was shown a red card on 24 minutes.

The Arsenal manager said: “When you come to a stadium like this, I said to them, you have to pick players that you are happy to come to war.

“You are going to have to fight, you’re going to have difficult moments, you’re going to suffer. It’s about how you approach those moments.

“If you rebuild yourself, if you are willing to help your team, then good things happen. At the end, you get rewarded and I think that is what happened today.”

Next up for the Gunners is the North London Derby against Tottenham on Sunday afternoon, in a match that is set to have huge implications on the top four race this season.
