Former Manchester United centre-back Rio Ferdinand has advised Edu to invest in a defensive partner to help get the best out of Ben White.
White, 23, signed for the north Londoners in a deal worth £50million from Brighton and Hove Albion earlier this summer.
He made his debut in the 2-0 opening night defeat to Thomas Frank’s Premier League newcomers, and White himself received a mixed report after struggling in the back four to contain the Bees’ exciting attack on the night.
“I think Ben White did well against Toney,” Ian Wright said after loss. “His distribution was very good.
“They are going to need to do something (in the transfer market) because if you are going to play against a promoted team.
“And you are not going to at least match them for the endeavour and the intensity that they are going to have then it’s going to be a long season for Arsenal. It’s worrying.”
That something will be coming in the form of former loanee Martin Odegaard and Aaron Ramsdale, as football.london understands that respective deals have been agreed for the pair totalling around £60million, with the former expected to feature against Chelsea at the weekend if everything goes well.
Despite Edu and co. showing their financial backing to Mikel Arteta after a poor start to the season, former Man United star Ferdinand has advised the board that a certain investment will need to be made before the transfer window slams shut on August 31.
“The issue I have with Arsenal is you can’t buy players for a year down the line. Ben White is good now but what you need is someone to come in and grab the players in the training ground,” he said on his YouTube Channel.
“I feel that at this stage of his career, Ben White needs a partner to bring him a lot, like a Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane or Thiago Silva. Arsenal have needed a centre-back to come in and defend.

“Ben White will end up being a decent signing but the biggest issue he’s got is if I was being courted with Arsenal now I’d think, ‘who am I playing with?’
“If I’m him I’m thinking, ‘I need some help, I’m getting exposed.'”
It is yet to be seen whether the Gunners will target a further centre-back to add to the summer recruits that will be made by Edu, but Ferdinand’s opinion as a former centre-half has given the board food for thought as we approach the latter stages of this summer’s transfer window.
