Arsenal had a strong start to the summer transfer window addressing both the forward and defensive positions, which clearly needed strengthening towards the back of last season. Despite a good start to the window, more acquisitions are still needed.
The Gunners have been searching for a midfielder and a winger throughout the window without much success. The young Brazilian star Marquinhos and Fabio Vieira were bought in for both positions, but these players are considered to be starters for the team in the future.
It seems Arsenal could make one more signing before the end of the summer, but it remains to be seen whether it will be a midfielder or a winger. However, Ousmane Dembele’s reported 2023 release clause could persuade the Gunners to wait until next year to strengthen in the wide areas.
According to French news outlet Foot Mercato, Dembele will have €50million (£42million) release clause that is active next season. The La Liga side completed the signing of Raphinha in this summer transfer window meaning Dembele’s game time could be limited while the Brazilian is at the club, potentially leading to a move ahead of the next campaign.
Arsenal are known to be keen admirers of Dembele. Spanish news outlet El Chiringuito claimed that Dembele’s agent had a meeting with the Gunners in the most recent January transfer window.
Dembele finished the last La Liga season with 13 assists, which ranked him fifth amongst the top five leagues in Europe for this campaign. This is even more impressive when you consider that he was left out of the Barcelona squad for large chunks of the season due to the uncertainty surrounding his contract.
If Arsenal were to sign him, he would improve the squad with his direct play. His blistering pace will also provide breathing space for Bukayo Saka, who has seemed to look burnt out at times this season due to the responsibility Mikel Arteta puts on his shoulders.
With the Gunners waiting for Dembele’s release clause to come into play, it also allows Edu to focus on signing a midfielder in this current transfer window. Youri Tielemans has been the player most heavily linked with the north London side.
The Gunners will need to sign a midfielder due to a lack of depth and quality in the middle of the park. CBS Sports reported earlier in the season that Tielemans would be available for £30m, which makes him an absolute bargain to solve Arsenal’s midfield issues.
