Edu’s James Maddison transfer plan revealed as Emile Smith Rowe pens new Arsenal contract – Football.London

James Maddison continues to be linked with a move to Arsenal this summer as Edu looks to bolster Mikel Arteta’s attacking options.

The 24-year-old Leicester City midfielder is on Arteta ‘s wishlist this summer, football.london understands, with the Gunners boss a big fan of his talents.

However, with the Foxes reportedly demanding £60million for Maddison ‘s signature, Arsenal would need to sell before they could even think about buying.

The England international, who has just under three years remaining on his contract at the King Power Stadium, is not seen as a priority this summer, according to The Athletic reporter David Ornstein.

With Emile Smith Rowe signing a new long-term contract at Arsenal, the club now see the 20-year-old as their ‘priority’ to play in the number 10 role.

Arteta wants to bring in another creative midfielder to ease the pressure on Smith Rowe, but it will be to compete with him rather than replace him.

That’s why it is unlikely Arsenal ‘will go to the level required’ to bring in Maddison, knowing that a deal with Leicester could be a tricky one to strike.

Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson thinks his old club signing Maddison this summer could be beneficial for both parties.

“James Maddison wasn’t called up by Gareth Southgate to represent England at Euro 2020,” Merson told Sports Keeda.

“So he will be fresh and raring to go ahead of the 2021-22 Premier League season.

“Before his unfortunate injury last season, he was absolutely flying for Leicester City and I got the feeling that he came back a bit too early. I like Maddison and I think he can make a real impact this season.

“He can really rip it up and will have an advantage over those who had international commitments earlier this summer, as those players may not start the forthcoming season for their respective clubs.”
