A number of Manchester United players have sent messages of support to Bruno Fernandes after his penalty miss against Aston Villa at the weekend.
The Portuguese playmaker had the chance to level the scores at 1-1 at Old Trafford after Kortney Hause had headed the visitors into a surprise lead in the 88th minute.
However, the usually reliable Fernandes blasted his effort over the bar, much to the shock of the Stretford End behind him.
The United man posted a lengthy apology on social media, in which he said “I will come back stronger, because these are the standards I hold myself to, but most of all for my team-mates and our fans.”
Fernandes was not only inundated with messages of backing from the United fanbase, but from a number of his team-mates as well.
United shared a graphic of the responses on Monday morning, with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Harry Maguire and Jesse Lingard all putting positive emojis in the replies for Fernandes.
Goalkeeper David De Gea replied with “always on my team” and Fernandes’ compatriot Diogo Dalot said “with you every day of the week.” Donny van de Beek and Anthony Martial also sent messages.
While Fernandes’ miss will inevitably lead to questions as to whether he or Ronaldo should be taking spot kicks going forward, the former Sporting CP man boasts an excellent record from 12 yards since coming to the Premier League.
In the top flight, he has now scored 13 from the 15 taken, leaving ‘keepers flummoxed with a variety of run-ups and striking techniques.
After back-to-back defeats, United will be looking to Fernandes to show his best again this week, as they face Villarreal in a key Champions League tussle on Wednesday.
