Arsenal attacking-midfielder Emile Smith Rowe has admitted that he ‘cannot wait’ to see fans back inside the Emirates Stadium after signing a new contract at the club.
After several weeks and months of speculation regarding his future, the youngster has put pen to paper on a new long-term deal in north London, easing any fears that some Gunners supporters may have had about him leaving the club this summer.
Aston Villa have been big admirers of the former Huddersfield Town loanee, but Arsenal always remained defiant that they would retain the services of the Hale End academy graduate.
The Gunners, who kick-off their Premier League campaign in just three weeks time when they face newly-promoted Brentford on the opening evening of the new season, have not disclosed the length of Smith Rowe’s new deal, but it is understood to amount to five years.
Now that he has officially put pen to paper on a new contract, Smith Rowe has taken to Arsenal’s official Twitter account to send a video message to the supporters, insisting he is relishing the prospect of playing in front of the Gunners faithful again.
He said: “Hi Arsenal fans, I cannot wait to see you at this stadium again. I’m buzzing to sign a new contract. See you soon.”
Smith Rowe, in truth, has barely felt the full impact of playing in front of Arsenal’s fans, with him having burst onto the scene during last season when supporters were only allowed to attend matches on very, very few occasions because of the pandemic. However, now that all coronavirus restrictions in England have been lifted, he will be hoping to wow a full Emirates Stadium with his talents from next month.
As well as sending a message to the club’s supporters in a short video message, the midfielder also reflected on the fact that he is the new proprietor of the famous No.10 shirt, making the switch from No.32 ahead of the start of the new campaign.
On landing one of the most famous shirt numbers that football has to offer, Smith Rowe told Arsenal’s club website: “Everyone knows that No 10 is a big shirt and it is definitely a big position as well. So I’m buzzing to be honest, I can’t wait to get on the pitch.
“It’s really special – I can’t explain the feeling when I found out. I’ve not really got the words to explain it right now! But yeah, I’m really happy.
“The legends that have played here and have worn the shirt… it’s a bit too much right now but I’m sure I will calm down after a while!
“When I was younger I used to watch Dennis Bergkamp, and when I was going through the academy Mesut Ozil was here as well and getting the opportunity to train with him and play with him as well was unbelievable.
“I just want to keep working hard and hopefully I can play like them and replicate what they’ve done.”
