F1 qualifying live coverage – F1 live text commentary and updates

This is the start of our live blog for qualifying at the Belgian Grand Prix. We’ll have all the build-up and then updates from the session itself, with the entries nearest the top the most recent ones.

13:30 CEST: Birthday boy Bottas

Valtteri Bottas‘ future is a mystery and he is under scrutiny after his big crash last time out, a crash that means he’ll serve a five-place grid penalty from wherever he finishes in this Belgian GP qualifying session. He then finished 11th in free practice free, so it’s not the best time for the Finn right now. But… today is his birthday. So, happy 32nd birthday Valtteri.

13:10 CEST: Verstappen tops free practice three

The two Red Bulls were quickest at a wet Spa-Francorchamps track on Saturday in the final practice session ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix. Max Verstappen set the fastest time of 1:56.924 on what he described as “greasy” conditions, while Sergio Perez was almost a full second behind, 0.947 seconds slower.

12:45 CEST: It’ll be a rainy Belgian GP qualifying

It’s a rainy day in Belgium, so this Saturday’s qualifying session could be extra exciting. Heavier rain is actually expected later on in the day, but the hour between 15:00 CEST and 16:00 CEST, when qualifying will take place, should still see some light rain.

12:15 CEST: A new chassis for Leclerc

Charles Leclerc‘s crash during practice on Friday meant a busy night of work for the Ferrari mechanics, who have ultimately decided to change the chassis. He will use this new chassis from free practice three onwards.

11:50 CEST: Another crash for Max Verstappen

For the third race weekend in a row, Max Verstappen has been involved in a crash. The first two weren’t exactly his fault, but on Friday he lost the rear and hit the wall during the second free practice session. In that session, though, it was the Dutchman who had set the fastest time.

11:30 CEST: What time does Belgian GP qualifying start?

There’s no sprint qualifying at the Belgian Grand Prix, so we have a normal kind of race weekend schedule. That means qualifying will begin at 15:00 CEST, which is 14:00 BST for those in the United Kingdom or 09:00 EDT for fans on the east coast of the USA.
