Manchester United have beaten near neighbours Liverpool 2-0 to secure their first win in the Women’s Super League. Both goals were scored in the second half after countless shots in the first not impacting the scoreline.
The first goal came from 17-year-old Lauren James. The youngster hit a beautiful strike in the 71st minute – United’s first goal this season and their first in the WSL. The side were promoted from the Championship last season.
The second goal came in added time. Liverpool’s Niamh Fahey brought Leah Galton down in the box and a penalty was awarded to The Reds.
Captain Katie Zelem took the kick and scored with keeper Anke Preuss diving in the wrong direction. This sealed victory for the home side.
While the score highlighted United’s domination, it did not reflect Liverpool’s great play in the first half. They created many chances and defended well to keep United goalless up to half time.
