Havertz, Werner, Ziyech and Zouma all start – confirmed Chelsea team vs Arsenal – Football.London

Thomas Tuchel has handed starts to German trio Timo Werner, Kai Havertz and Antonio Rudiger as Chelsea take on Arsenal in their penultimate pre-season friendly of the summer.

It will be the first match action for the trio since the end of the EURO 2020 championships for the country when they were beaten by England in the last 16 of the competition.

Also starting in the Blues midfield is Mateo Kovacic for his first pre-season action since the Euros with Croatia.

Tuchel has the vast majority of his squad back with him having had a pretty makeshift team to work with for most of the summer and that is reflected in the squad this afternoon.

N’Golo Kante returns but he is only on the bench and there is no Lewis Baker, Ethan Ampadu, Matt Miazga, Tino Anjorin, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Kenedy, Charly Musonda, Armando Broja or Ike Ugbo in the squad.

The game has come too soon for Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpiliocueta, who only reported back to Cobham to begin their pre-season on Friday.

In the starting eleven at the Emirates, Edouard Mendy will get the first 45 minutes at least while Callum Hudson-Odoi will continue to line up at wing back as he has done for the majority of pre-season so far.

The three centre backs will be Rudiger, Trevoh Chalobah and Kurt Zouma, who has been heavily linked with a move away from the club in the past 48 hours with West Ham reportedly interested in signing the centre back. The defender has also been rumoured to be a makeweight in a deal to bring Jules Kounde to west London,

It appears that Christian Pulisic will also play as a wing-back, with Marcos Alonso not involved and Ben Chilwell yet to return from his summer break.

In midfield, Ruben Loftus-Cheek is handed a big chance to impress Tuchel alongside Kovacic as Loftus-Cheek battles for a future in west London.

The front three consists of Havertz and Werner, with the latter likely to play through the middle with Havertz playing off one of the flanks as opposed to the false nine, while Hakim Ziyech will join them in the front three.

Chelsea team: Mendy; Hudson-Odoi, Chalobah, Zouma, Rudiger, Pulisic; Loftus-Cheek, Kovacic; Ziyech, Werner, Havertz.
