Houssem Aouar’s agents are said to have been left surprised by the Gunners’ move for English playmaker James Maddison this summer.
Arsenal have offered four players in a player-plus-cash deal for the Leicester City star, football.london understands.
The Gunners are exploring other options to try and lower the £60m price tag on the 24-year-old’s head and football.london understands that the Gunners have offered one of Reiss Nelson, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Joe Willock and Eddie Nketiah as makeweights in the deal for the Foxes midfielder.
However, it is understood that Leicester are not interested in taking any of Arsenal’s players, and would prefer a cash only deal for Maddison, who is open to moving to the Emirates Stadium.
Despite just extending promising talent Emile Smith Rowe’s contract, Mikel Arteta is desperate to sort out Arsenal’s creative issues by signing someone else to help share the burden with the Gunners’ new number 10.
Aouar came close to becoming that man last year, but a transfer never materialised.
Now, according to the Mirror, because the club were so interested in Aouar then, the player’s agents are said to be surprised that the Gunners have opted to go in a different direction with their pursuit of Maddison.
A move for the 23-year-old is still on the cards should Arsenal wish to turn their attentions to him once again, and the French club are reportedly willing to sell him for an offer in the region of £30million, a fee that is half of what Leicester are demanding for Maddison, for a player who has Champions League experience and is a year younger.
Whilst Arsenal fans will probably be happy with signing either, they’ll be bitterly disappointed if they end up missing out on both, so it’s up to Edu to get a transfer over the line.
