Manchester United fans should be excited by the links with Eduardo Camavinga. According to the Guardian, the Red Devils are interested in a potential £25.7million switch. And the French teenager would be an outstanding addition.
As good as Camavinga is in his own right, the teenager’s arrival could ultimately unleash another United prospect.
James Garner is United’s heir apparent to Michael Carrick. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said as much in quotes published by the MEN in 2019. And Camavinga has the skill-set to free up the 20-year-old.
Garner gets stuck in like the best of them. But he can excel alongside a player who does the dirty work, and few do that better than Camavinga.
The 18-year-old is not yet a goal-scorer or a creator. In 82 games for Rennes has has just two goals and five assists. But that is not his job. He is an excellent central midfielder, allowing the more creative players to blossom around him.
Garner is certainly creative. His passing range is excellent and he can be United’s pendulum just as Carrick was before him.
A central midfield of Garner and Camavinga, playing behind Bruno Fernandes, could be one hell of a watch.
It wouldn’t be instant. But signing the latter for a bargain price would be just what Garner needs to flourish long term.
A very bright future
Solskjaer is clearly planning for the future as well as the present. Now Garner needs to decide which category he is in.
He could break through next season after a stellar loan spell at Nottingham Forest.
He shook off the disappointment of a previous loan move to become one of the first name on the team sheet.
And Camavinga could be just the player to excel alongside Garner for the long term.
Carrick needed certain players around him to really shine. And Garner will be no different.
The question is, can the youngster hit the heights of his experienced coach? A certain Frenchman could certainly help in that regard.
