Following her exit from Iberdrola side Madrid CFF recently, Indomitable Lionesses’ defender Aurelle Awona has been signed by Stade de Reims of France.
Through its official website, Stade de Reims confirmed the arrival of Awona who ended her contract mutually with Madrid, on a one-and-half year deal.
The Cameroonian joined the Spanish outfit in January from Dijon and made five appearances across all competition before the enforced break in football owing to coronavirus pandemic.
The 27 years old becomes Reims’ third signing this summer and is raring to go, having described her move as an opportunity to get close to her family.
“I wanted to discover another championship, another culture and, when I had the opportunity, I seized it,” she said on club’s website.
“I liked the proposed project, it also allowed me to get closer to my family, in a good team, young, with qualities and the facilities here.”
Awona represented Cameroon during last year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup in France and helped her team get to the Round of 16, where they lost to England.
During the course of her career, she played for US Fontenay, US Cergy Clos, Cergy-Pontoise FC, Domont FC, Le Mans and ASJ Soyaux.
