Harry Kane has announced that he will be remaining with Tottenham Hotspur this summer and football.london understands that a January exit is not on the cards.
The 28-year-old England captain announced on Wednesday: “It was incredible to see the reception from the Spurs fans on Sunday and to read some of the messages of support I’ve had in the last few weeks.
“I will be staying at Tottenham this summer and will be 100 per cent focused on helping the team achieve success. #COYS.”
Kane, who signed a six-year deal in 2018, has been linked with a move to Manchester all summer with Pep Guardiola admitting that should Tottenham be willing to negotiate then City were very interested.
The Tottenham talisman had informed the club of his desire to take on a fresh challenge with the champions, but that big bid never arrived from Manchester for one of the world’s best strikers.
Having signed Jack Grealish for £100m from Aston Villa, the only offer that Tottenham are understood to have received from City for the Premier League’s Golden Boot and Playmaker award winner was one of just £75m with £25m in add-ons.
The champions were expected to return with another larger bid for the striker in the final week of the summer transfer window, but Spurs chairman Daniel Levy showed no intention of letting the club’s star player go, particularly with just days remaining.
It was always seen to be difficult to replace Kane with a number of players across a whole summer, let alone in the final days of a window.
Rather than show frustration at the lack of a move, after returning to training with the squad following his summer holidays and subsequent isolation, Kane focused on the task ahead at Tottenham.
football.london understands that both Kane and his representatives held positive talks with Spurs’ managing director Fabio Paratici and also new head coach Nuno Espirito Santo in the weeks since his return.
Espirito Santo was keen to get the England striker back to full fitness following his summer break in the Bahamas and the USA in preparation for the high fitness football he requires of his teams.
The Portuguese shares similar beliefs on pressing and movement among the players to Kane’s former Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino and all the players have been worked hard with double sessions most days of pre-season.
Those who do not play in matches are also pushed hard on the pitch after the games in training sessions if they were substitutes or back at Hotspur Way if they were not included in the matchday squad.
Espirito Santo was delighted after being told of Kane’s decision.
“I think since Harry joined us he has been working so this is what we value. His attitude in training sessions have been great,” he said.
“It’s finished, he is going to be with us. He worked today, he is an option for tomorrow. Fantastic news for everybody.”
Now Kane is back in the fold and despite some fears from the fans over the wording of his statement with the use of the word “summer”, those close to the striker have told football.london that he will be going nowhere in the January transfer window.
Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham
From the latest transfer news to those glorious wins in north London and beyond! There might even be a laugh or two too.
Kane is understood to have been taken aback by the support he got on Sunday afternoon from the travelling Tottenham fans, who sung his name and had his back as he was jeered and mocked by the Wolves supporters when he came on for the final 15 minutes of the match.
The Spurs forward, who is the club’s second highest goalscorer of all time, went over to the thousands of supporters who had made the trip up to Molineux after the match at the weekend and applauded them as a way of thanks.
Now those fans will have their star man leading the line for another season at least and he is expected to be in the squad for the Europa Conference League match against Pacos de Ferreira on Thursday evening.
Some Tottenham fans will still have to be convinced about taking him back into their hearts after ‘one of their own’ wanted to leave their club.
However, Kane has the ability and the currency of goals to win most if not all of them back in the weeks and months ahead.
Making this clear statement on his future was an important first step.
