Andreas Pereira is pre-season Pirlo to fans, but he’s got a different nickname with one member of the Manchester United squad.
The Brazilian international scored a stunning volley from 25 yards out against Brentford in the 2-2 draw with the Premier League newcomers in a pre-season friendly at Old Trafford, receiving a standing ovation from teammates and fans in the stadium.
Pereira took to Instagram following the game to post a clip of the goal along with the caption that the hard work continues from here and his comments were instantly filled with recognisable faces praising the strike.
But one comment in particular that stood out was that of James Garner, who came on in the second half as a substitute for Pereira, as he seemed to reveal a new nickname.
Garner’s comment simply read “Xabiii !!!”, which is likely an ode to the legendary Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonso of Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich fame.
The holding midfielder was famed for his incredible passing range and defensive awareness as he won the World Cup and European Championships twice with Spain as well as the Champions League in 2005 and 2014, four league titles and several other cup competitions before retiring in 2017.
Pereira’s passing range has always been one of the best parts of his game but he’s shown the spectacular strike is in his locker before, with a screamer against Southampton 2019 being named the club’s goal of the season for the 18/19 season that year.
The former PSV and Valencia man’s future at the club is currently unclear but he recently revealed that he’d be keen to return to Lazio, where he spent last season on loan making 33 appearances and scoring one goal in Serie A.
