Jamie Carragher agrees with Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta on one key aspect of North London Derby – Football.London

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has agreed with Mikel Arteta that ‘more is at stake’ ahead of this weekend’s North London Derby between Tottenham and Arsenal.

Both sides have not had a rip-roaring start to the season, having been plagued with inconsistency during the opening weeks of the campaign.

Arsenal lost their first three league games of the season but have since won 1-0 against both Burnley and Norwich City to lift them up to 13th. Meanwhile, Nuno Espirito Santo’s Tottenham were the league’s early pace-setters, but have since fallen away after consecutive 3-0 losses.

Both sides then will certainly be keen to put down a marker for the remainder of the campaign, but Carragher insists that it is not just three points that are up for grabs in the first North London Derby of the season.

Writing in his column for The Telegraph, the Sky Sports pundit said: “What is at stake is something more important to their fans – hope and trust. Nothing builds or erodes that like a derby win or defeat.”

This is a sentiment that Arsenal boss Arteta has agreed on as he gets set to experience his first North London Derby as a manager with fans in the stands.

Asked if the current crop of players at the Emirates Stadium understand the magnitude of the game, the Spaniard replied: “They do and I will make sure that they understand what it means.

“The history between the two clubs and where this rivalry comes from and what it means emotionally to all of our supporters. You have to play that game with slightly different skin because there is a little bit more at stake.”

Arteta has been victorious just once in the three meetings against Spurs as a manager – that solitary victory coming last season at the Emirates Stadium.

As a player for the Gunners, Arteta only lost twice in nine meetings before his retirement in 2016.
