Jan Vertonghen’s brilliant eight-word message that sums up Erik Lamela and his time at Tottenham – Football.London

Erik Lamela’s popularity at Tottenham can be seen by the countless messages he’s received from his former teammates since completing his move to Sevilla.

In the last year of his contract at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Spurs used the Argentine in a deal to sign talented winger Bryan Gil from the Spanish side.

Initially needing some convincing to leave after eight years at the club, Lamela has signed a three-year contract at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium and will achieve his ambition of playing in La Liga before he calls time on his career.

Paying tribute to Lamela on social media over the past 24 hours following his long spell in the capital, Tottenham uploaded a collection of photos as they looked back at the 29-year-old’s best moments in a Spurs shirt.

From his rabona goal against Arsenal to his wonderful strike in the 3-0 win over Manchester United in April 2016, Lamela certainly did enjoy some great times playing for the Lilywhites.

Former teammate Jan Vertonghen was one of a number of people to comment on the Instagram post and he joked about what it will be like in training for the Spurs players now the attacker has moved on elsewhere.

“Shin pads can go off in training now!” commented the Belgium defender.

A player who would always give his all for Spurs, this was very much the case as well on the training pitch as the player flew into tackles to try and win the ball off his teammates.

His comment just summed up Lamela perfectly.

Even last week Oliver Skipp and Dane Scarlett commented on what the player was like to come up against in training when they were answering some random questions as part of a video for the club’s YouTube channel.

Asked if they were on the receiving end of a big tackle from a first-team player, Skipp said: “To be fair, when you first come up in boxes and Coco’s tearing around. Coco for me.”

“Coco for me, too,” chipped in Scarlett.

Former Tottenham player Juan Foyth also opened up on Lamela’s mentality on the training pitch in April and revealed that his good friend had even offered to fight him a couple of times during training at Hotspur Way.

“We would beat them,” the Villarreal defender told 90min.es on whether Spurs’ Argentine contingent would beat the Welsh Mafia trio of Gareth Bale, Ben Davies and Joe Rodon in a fight.

“Apart from the fact that Coco [Lamela] goes looking for it. Do you know how up for it he is? Forget about it.

“[He is] very hard. When he gets angry, he goes looking for it like crazy. He has offered to fight me a couple of times! Obviously in training and that, heat of the moment, I’m not the only one.

“Off the pitch yeah, we have a great relationship, we’re friends.”

Training may now be a little safer for Tottenham’s players with Lamela no longer at the club, although Sevilla’s stars may be in for a bit of a shock the first time they come up against their new teammate in training.

Lamela will most definitely be missed at Tottenham.
