Jorginho responds to Lionel Messi, Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo Ballon d’Or comparisons – The Mirror

Jorginho declared “nobody has won more than I have this season” as he responded to speculation he could challenge for the 2021 Ballon d’Or.

The midfielder was integral for club and country as Chelsea won the Champions League and Italy triumphed at Euro 2020 to complete a glittering campaign of continental success.

Only one man – Real Madrid veteran Luka Modric – has been able to break up Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo’s duopoly of the award over the last 12 years.

But Jorginho’s spectacular season has thrust him into the conversation for football’s greatest individual honour – and the 29-year-old claims he is in with a shot.

“We all have dreams,” Jorginho told Chelsea’s official website . “But, I’ll be honest, it depends on the criteria that the decision is based on.

“If we’re talking about talent then I know I’m not the best in the world. But if it’s going on titles, then nobody has won more than I have this season!

“How could I compare myself to Messi, Neymar or Cristiano Ronaldo? They’ve got completely different characteristics to me. But, I repeat, it depends on the criteria.”

As well as lifting two trophies in the last two months, Jorginho came close to winning the FA Cup only for Chelsea to fall short in the final against Leicester City.

The Brazil-born Italian had just one major honour to his name – the Coppa Italia with Napoli – before arriving at Stamford Bridge for £50million back in 2018.

But Jorginho’s trophy cabinet has swelled since joining the Blues and he also has a Europa League winners’ medal as well as runner-up medals from two FA Cups and the Carabao Cup.

“It is hard to describe because it’s something that was so far away for me,” added the Hellas Verona academy graduate on his silverware-winning exploits.

“It was a really big dream for me and it is such a good feeling to achieve these dreams.

“It’s been a very good season. We did so much as a team, it was a good season for everyone involved.”

Jorginho also spoke of his excellent relationship with Thomas Tuchel, who was a revelation in the Blues dugout after replacing Frank Lampard in January.

He said: “The manager understands my characteristics and he told me what he wants me to do. I try my best for the team every game.

“Now I can’t wait to have fans back next season because it was weird playing without them. We want them back supporting the team and I can’t wait to see them again.”

Chelsea commence the new Premier League campaign against Crystal Palace on Saturday 14 August.
