Juan Mata has warned Bruno Fernandes he’ll need to wait at least another year before he can get his hands on the No.8 shirt at Manchester United.
Mata, 33, is set to retain his favourite squad number next season after penning a one-year contract extension, much to the dismay of his close friend and teammate.
Fernandes joked last week the only downside to Mata signing a new deal at United was the fact he’d be keeping the No.8 shirt number which he wants for himself.
“I guess I’ll have to wait for the number 8 another year,” Fernandes joked on social media, reacting to Mata’s extension.
Before adding: “Congrats brother!! Well deserved! An example and an inspiration on and off the pitch.”
Now the Spaniard has given his take on the situation and reiterated that Fernandes might need to wait even longer than a year if he manages to earn another new contract.
“At least another year!” Mata joked in an interview with official club media.
“I think he’s happy that I’m staying and I’m happy to be playing with him. We’ve got a great relationship since he came and, of course, he’s been brilliant for us on and off the pitch. He’s also a great guy and an example for others.
“Unfortunately for him, he will have to be patient!”
