Chelsea are on the hunt for a new central defender this summer as Thomas Tuchel looks to bolster his backline ahead of the upcoming season.
Many names have been linked with a move to the Blues this summer despite Tuchel having a wealth of experience to call on in his defence.
One name in particular has done the rounds over the last few days in Jules Kounde of Sevilla, following a fine 2020/21 campaign for the Spanish club.
The France international represented his country at the recent Euro 2020 tournament and his stock continues to rise in the footballing world.
However, Chelsea do not seem to be the only club with an interest in the defender, and, with that being said, football.london has rounded up everything being reported on Kounde’s future.
Kounde’s stance revealed
In an interview prior to France’s Euro 2020 campaign back in May, Kounde revealed that he was “certain” to leave Sevilla this summer.
The Frenchman said: “Regarding my future, it’s certain that I will perhaps have to change clubs this summer.
“But nothing has been finalised yet. I have not decided anything.
“My goal is to play for a big club, to try to always progress and to win trophies. It’s true that I might have to move but that’s not relevant today.”
Man United and Spurs keen on move
According to a report from the Mail, Manchester United are ‘preparing a move’ for Kounde in addition to their pursuit of Varane.
The defender’s versatility and potential are two things that stand out to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The report also mentions that the Seville-based club are ‘bracing themselves’ for offers coming their way in the next month or so, with Tottenham also said to be interested in Kounde.
Sevilla make decision
According to Fabrizio Romano, Sevilla have agreed to let central defender Sergi Gomez leave the club, something that could have an impact on the potential sale of Kounde.
Romano’s tweet read: “Agreement reached today between Sevilla and Espanyol for Sergi Gomez, now it’s paperwork time. The centre-back joins Espanyol on a permanent move, done deal.”
“Sergi Gomez will sign as new Espanyol player until June 2024 + option to extend until 2025.”
This does not necessarily have a direct impact on Sevilla’s willingness to let Kounde leave the club, but a replacement for Gomez is likely to be hunted in the next few weeks.
Chelsea open talks over Kounde
Spurs apparently face some considerable competition in the pursuit of Kounde from Premier League rivals Chelsea.
According to Sky Sports, the Blues have opened talks with Sevilla regarding the signing of the Frenchman with a fee still to be agreed.
Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano has suggested that he is Chelsea’s prime candidate for a centre-back signing this summer.
Personal terms agreed and possible Zouma swap
According to Romano, Chelsea have agreed personal terms with Kounde and could use Kurt Zouma to try and lure Sevilla into selling their defender.
Zouma was not a staple in Tuchel’s team like he was Frank Lampard due to the re-emergence of Antonio Rudiger in the side.
The French defender could be used as a bargaining tool to try and lure Kounde away from Seville.
Chelsea are said to be offering around €30million/€35million (£25.5million/£29.8million) plus Zouma in the negotiation to sign the France international, with Kounde ‘wanting’ to join the reigning Champions League winners.
