Lionel Messi namechecks Chelsea incident among his Barcelona regrets in emotional goodbye – Football.London

Lionel Messi reflected back on 2012 Champions League defeat to Chelsea as one of his Barcelona regrets as he waved goodbye to the Camp Nou.

The six-time Ballon d’Or winner hosted an emotional press conference in Catalonia on Sunday morning, confirming that he was set to draw to a close a spectacular 21-year career with the club, following a statement from Barca earlier this week.

Following the announcement, the 34-year-old was asked if he had any regrets or motivations for the future.

He answered in the only way that Messi can, with silverware, but did reveal that defeat to Chelsea in the Champions League in 2012, a tournament that the Blues ended up winning, remains a sour point in his career.

He said: “I would have liked to have tried to win another Champions League.

“We got knocked out in the semi-finals by Liverpool which stopped us getting to another final. We got to the semi-final with Chelsea with Pep [Guardiola], they prevented us from getting to another final.

“And I think there could have been another time where we could have won another Champions League.”

The Blues famously overcame Guardiola’s all-conquering Catalans to book a place alongside Bayern Munich for just their second appearance in a Champions League final.

Chelsea earned victory at Stamford Bridge in the first-leg, Didier Drogba netting the only goal of the match.

They then earned a 2-2 draw with Barcelona in Spain. Sergio Busquets and Andres Iniesta had found the net for the hosts, with John Terry then receiving a red card.

Ramires pulled a goal back for the Blues before the break, with Messi himself then missing from the penalty spot. Fernando Torres famously scored with only moments remaining to secure Chelsea’s place in the final.
