Malang Sarr and Giovani Lo Celso clash proves Chelsea have what Tottenham can only dream of – Football.London

I remember when the Tottenham vs Chelsea derbies were intense. The fans in the stands going at each other with their rivalry chants. The Dele Alli’s and Diego Costa’s of the teams giving it their very all. Before last season, their last few meets have not been a comfortable watch for Chelsea fans, however, the tide is shifting.

Chelsea visited Tottenham to see off the Carabao Cup semi-final. Leading 2-0 from the first leg at the Bridge, it was about seeing through the tie with a win or draw. A 1-0 lead from a Rudiger header landed the Blues their spot in the final where they will face either Liverpool or Arsenal.

There weren’t many takeaways from a match that Chelsea dominated; however, there were a few moments that told me everything I needed to know about the rivalry.

Malang Sarr, an unsung hero. No, he may not have had the cleanest performance at left-back. He also was not the best defender in blue in my eyes. But he proved himself to the fans. He passed the derby test. He was press resistant on the ball and off the ball with Giovani Lo Celso lurking.

The first half saw Lo Celso give Sarr a tough time. The Frenchman appeared to have kicked the ball at the Tottenham ball boy and Lo Celso quickly ran over to him to question him. He could have been calmer but the heat of the derby left the Argentina international furious. He shouted at Sarr in the hope of getting a reaction but Sarr calmly laughed in his face.

Now I don’t know about you, but I saw this as a Sarr politely letting him know that he is not worth the fight. The Tottenham fans clearly took that personally as loud boos rung around the stadium.

I love a derby as much as any football fan. It brings out the passion of the players, and togetherness with the fanbase. The atmosphere created is a beauty, win or lose. I remember the battle of the Bridge back in 2016. Tottenham travelled to Stamford Bridge to play a must-win match but Chelsea could not let that happen.

Twelve yellow cards in an entertaining match from start to finish. Both teams gave it their all for the fans and for the badge. Since then, the London derby has been intense but now it feels different.

You almost feel sorry for Spurs in their current form. One of our fiercest rivals, looking lost in possession and awkward in front of goal. It just didn’t feel right. I guess, the reality is that they are no longer a threat to Chelsea right now. Despite hiring our former boss Antonio Conte, they struggled across both legs to get the better of the Blues.

The fan in me relishes the route in which Tottenham’s form is taking, Chelsea have won the derby because we are simply better than them. It’s time we put the former events of the Battle of the Bridge to bed. It’s a circle of life moment – what used to be a quiet derby due to Chelsea’s dominance, turned into a rowdy one with Mauricio Pochettino’s takeover and now we are back where we started. A full 360 in the Roman Abramovich Era.
