Man Utd Finally Confirm Ronaldo Shirt Number Amid Cavani Confusion – Todayuknews – Todayuknews

Manchester United have finally confirmed Cristiano Ronaldo will wear the No.7shirt in his second spell with the club.

The Portuguese striker completed his return to Old Trafford from Juventus on transfer deadline day.

But there was plenty of mystery over which shirt number he would be handed due to Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani holding his favoured shirt number.

Ronaldo made the No.7 his own after taking over from David Beckham during his first stint at United, before going on to wear it at Real Madrid and Juventus, as well as for the Portugal national team.

Premier League rules state that a player cannot take over a number already registered to another player unless they get special dispensation.

But United appear to have been successful with their request as they made their announcement on Thursday.

Manchester United can confirm that Cristiano Ronaldo will wear the iconic no.7 shirt after returning to Old Trafford,” a statement on their website read.

“The Portuguese superstar famously wore the legendary shirt number during his first spell at United and we can now confirm that Ronaldo will have it on his back once again.

“In his first six seasons at the club, between 2003 and 2009, Ronaldo made 292 appearances and scored 118 goals, winning nine trophies including three Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League.

“As we all know, the no. 7 is a special number in the history of United.

“It has previously been worn by club icons like George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona and David Beckham. Now, it returns to the man who succeeded Beckham in it, Ronaldo.”

Cavani will instead be given the No.21 shirt for the remainder of the campaign.
