Man Utd’s Mauricio Pochettino plan put on ice in latest managerial development – Mirror.co.uk

Manchester United intend to stick to the plan of hiring an interim manager leaving Mauricio Pochettino’s Premier League dream on hold.

United are on the lookout for a new boss following the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the Paris Saint-Germain head coach has emerged as the frontrunner for the role.

Reports claim the Argentine is unsettled in the French capital, despite only landing the role at the start of the year.

Pochettino is yet to buy a house in Paris, while his family have remained in London since he left Tottenham in 2019.

The ex-Spurs manager is currently in Manchester as his PSG side take on Manchester City at the Etihad on Wednesday night.

He would reportedly be open to taking the role at Old Trafford, but according to the Daily Star, he will be made to wait.

After being rebuffed by PSG, United are likely to press ahead with appointing an interim boss, with former Barcelona chief Ernesto Valverde the favourite

In a statement released by Red Devils bosses announcing Solskjaer’s departure, it was confirmed that they would hire an interim manager to take them into the summer.

Michael Carrick has been named the caretaker and got his stint off to the perfect start with a win over Villarreal in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

United chiefs remain optimistic that Carrick could help alleviate some of the pressure on their shoulders, giving them time to get the next appointment right.

A number of names have been linked with the post for the rest of the campaign, including former Barcelona boss Valverde.

It is understood Valverde, who left the Camp Nou in 2020 would be keen on the job and has held initial talks with the club.

Ex-Lyon head coach Rudi Garcia and former RB Leipzig chief Ralf Rangnick have also been named as contenders, with United hoping to reach a decision by mid-December.

That would mean the new man is in charge for the crunch festive fixture schedule where United’s ambitions for the remainder of the season will be shaped.

After 12 games of the season, they already find themselves 12 points off league leaders Chelsea with full focus now on achieving a top-four finish and securing Champions League football.

Once the season concludes, full focus will then turn towards landing an elite manager, where Pochettino and Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers will come into the picture.

For now, Carrick will remain in charge and will hope to build on his positive start when they face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Carrick retains the support of the board and has already stated that he is happy to remain in place for as long as the club requires him.

The Daily Star also confirm that once his time in the dugout is over he will return to the coaching staff to work alongside the new interim manager.
