Manchester United are close to agreeing personal terms with Raphael Varane as they continue to make progress on a transfer for the Real Madrid defender.
Sources have told the Manchester Evening NewsUnited are not ‘far off’ from finalising the 28-year-old Varane’s demands and hope to conclude the deal within the next few weeks.
Varane’s preference is to head straight to Manchester following his holiday, rather than have to return to Real Madrid for any pre-season training.
Madrid want to sell Varane this summer as he has under a year left on his contract and they have no intention of allowing him to leave without obtaining a fee. The MEN revealed Madrid’s intention to sell Varane to United in March.
Negotiations have been described as ‘pretty slow’ but there is still confidence that Varane will join United this summer. There was no rush to complete the Varane signing as he had a planned break following participation for France at the European Championship.
Madrid idealistically valued Varane at £80million but know they cannot command a fee anywhere near that figure and sources say United are expected to sign Varane for a ‘good price’.
The MEN revealed last month United were working on a £50m package to sign Varane but Madrid were holding out for a higher fee.
Varane is currently holidaying with his wife and two children following France’s elimination from Euro 2020 at the last 16 stage.
The United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward claimed he was prepared to sanction a £100million move for Varane following the 2018 World Cup.
