Manchester United could be handed a transfer opportunity thanks to Lionel Messi – Manchester Evening News

Paris Saint-Germain’s busy summer of recruitment has seen the club bring in a number of notable new additions. The most obvious of which is of course Lionel Messi, who is the highest-paid player in world football.

He’s been joined by former Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos, Italy international goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, former Liverpool star Georginio Wijnaldum and Inter wing-back Achraf Hakimi.

It’s undoubtedly been an exciting summer for the Parisians, but attention will now switch to slimming down the club’s bloated wage bill before the closure of this summer’s transfer window.

There has only been one notable exit from the club so far with left-back Mitchel Bakker joining Bayer Leverkusen in a £6.5million deal. As a result, more exits look to be imminent, and recently French outlet Le Parisien highlighted five players who have reportedly been identified as being allowed to leave PSG this summer.

The five players according to them are Julian Draxler, Pablo Sarabia, Rafinha Alcantara – the brother of Liverpool midfielder Thiago, Layvin Kurzawa and Thilo Kehrer.

And of the five, it’s Kehrer that could meet Manchester United ‘s transfer needs – although there is nothing to suggest he is a current target and funds are limited unless they secure player sales. The Reds are exploring the possibility of signing a midfielder, a full-back or another centre half, and Kehrer could provide them with exactly what they’re looking for.

The German international joined PSG in 2018 from Schalke in a deal worth just under £30million and has since gone onto make 97 club appearances.

In terms of a physical profile, he’s what you’d look for in a central defender, big and strong standing at 6ft1in. He reads the game well and is difficult to overcome in one vs one duels, highlighted by his solid defensive duel success rate of 63.4 per cent last season.

For context Harry Maguire, United’s best defender, had a Premier League success rate of 70.6 per cent last season.

A downside to his game though, particularly given his size, is his ability in the air. Although he’s competent, he doesn’t excel, and this is highlighted by his aerial duel success rate of just 53.4 per cent from the previous campaign.

Thanks to the arrival of Raphael Varane alongside Maguire, United have two players who dominate in this department and Kehrer, based on his numbers above, looks like he’d struggle to dislodge either from the heart of the United defence. Yet not many defenders from across Europe would.

Whilst Kehrer might not be at the same high ceiling as Varane and Maguire, he’s still a very competent player who could not only add greater depth in that the centre-back department, but also in the right-back position too.

His ability on the ball aids him in this position and he’s a good technical player. He’s calm and composed on the ball when playing out from the back, but also brave in the attacking third, willing to make over or underlapping runs and get himself into good crossing locations when given the licence to do so.

The reported availability of the 24-year-old has already attracted interest from a number of top European sides, the most notable being Bayern Munich with Julian Nagelsmann looking to bring in a versatile defensive player.

United themselves need to offload surplus squad players to raise funds for sales in this window, meaning fees could be a sticking point.

Yet PSG’s eagerness to sell could be something they could expose and use to their advantage, landing a top international defender for a cut-price fee.
