Manchester United fans confused after Raphael Varane transfer ‘confirmed’ by phoney Lee Grant account – Manchester Evening News

Manchester United fans were left confused on Thursday after a verified account welcomed Raphael Varane to the club.

Attempting to trick other users into believing they were looking at United’s official account on Twitter, the verified account – with the username @lee_grant13 – went to the effort of mocking up a graphic with Varane donning United’s new adidas home kit. The amateur-looking graphic contained a misspelling of Varane’s first name, referring to him as ‘Rapheal’, rather than ‘Raphael’.

The account has since gone private but beforehand its display name had changed to ‘Manchester United’ with an image of the club crest as its display picture.

United goalkeeper Lee Grant is not currently on Twitter.

Some fans were confused by the post and unsure as to whether it was a confirmation or a hoax.

“Was @leeGrant_13 account hacked??? What’s that Varane tweet about???” asked one fan while another responded “YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS! VARANE IS RED”.

Varane is entering the last year of his contract and so this summer provides the penultimate opportunity for Real Madrid to cash in on the defender they signed from Lens for £9m a decade ago.

Sources have previously told the Manchester Evening NewsUnited are not ‘far off’ from finalising the 28-year-old Varane’s demands and hope to conclude the deal within the next few weeks.
