Pressure is mounting on the United boss after a disappointing run of three league games without victory heading into Sunday’s crunch clash with arch rivals Liverpool.
Italian boss Conte has been linked with the post and despite the 52-year-old’s success with Inter and Chelsea, Schmeichel does not believe that he would be suitable for United.
Peter Schmeichel claims Antonio Conte (L) is not the man to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (R)
‘You can say, “Conte is brilliant”, but he doesn’t stay anywhere for more than a couple of years,’ the former goalkeeper told The Times.
‘We are not that football club. We tried that already. It doesn’t work. Louis van Gaal didn’t win the Premier League, [Jose] Mourinho didn’t. You say Conte or another name, it’s no difference.
‘It’s about them and what they want to do in a small window of Manchester United’s big history.
‘The problem Ole has is that in this world of quick fixes and fast news he has to win yesterday.
United have failed to register a win in their last three league games with pressure mounting
Yet Schmeichel insists that his old team-mate should be given more time in charge of the club
‘It has to be delivered now. But it’s not the real world. We stopped that development for a period and our competitors closed the gap then ran away.’
Solskjaer has entered his third full season as Manchester United boss and is still searching for his first trophy.
The Norwegian fell short in the Europa League final last term and United currently lie five points adrift of league leaders Chelsea after eight games.
Schmeichel previously labelled criticism of Solskjaer ‘ridiculous’, telling ITV: ‘Do they (United fans) want another Van Gaal or another Mourinho? What do they want?
‘It’s been tried, bringing in the so-called big-name managers and they don’t have the same care and attention to detail in the youth and development and DNA of the club as Ole has.’
The club legend said big-name managers like Jose Mourinho and Louis van Gaal do not work
