Manchester United respond to Alan Shearer’s warning amid top four battle with Arsenal – Football.London

Manchester United responded to Alan Shearer’s pre-match warning with a 1-0 victory against Aston Villa on Monday evening.

Scott McTominay put the hosts into an early lead at Old Trafford and the header from the Scotland international was enough to see United progress into the fourth round of the FA Cup.

United, coming into their FA Cup third round tie with Aston Villa, have won just three of their six matches – in all competitions – under interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

The German coach was appointed as the successor to sacked manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following Man United’s poor start to the season, with the 63-year-old having a contract at Old Trafford until the end of the term.

United are set to be one of Arsenal’s biggest top four rivals this season, with, as it stands, the Manchester-based side sitting four points behind the Gunners – who are currently occupying fourth-place – though Rangnick’s side have a game in hand.

Shearer, when speaking before United’s cup clash with Aston Villa, warned Rangnick that he needs to find a way of playing in Manchester sooner rather than later.

“First and foremost this interim manager has got to find a system that works for this set of players,” the Premier League’s all-time top scorer said live on BBC One.

“This set of players has to have a better attitude going forward because as of late it hasn’t been anywhere near good enough from a lot of the players.

“That has to start tonight. The system that the manager has played up until now hasn’t really worked so we expect a little bit of a change to that tonight in terms of the system and individuals.

“It’s got to start tonight it has to start somewhere for him and this squad.”

Arsenal will be hoping Aston Villa can get revenge on United in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon when the two meet again at Villa Park.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are in North London Derby action on Sunday afternoon away at Tottenham.
