After weeks of speculation, Arsenal starlet Emile Smith Rowe has finally signed a new deal at the Emirates Stadium.
It has been confirmed that the Hale End graduate has put pen to paper on a new long-term deal in north London, believed to be worth five years, even though the length of the contract has not been disclosed by the Gunners.
The confirmation of him putting pen to paper on a new deal means that it will bring an end to the ongoing speculation concerning his future, meaning the rumours linking him with a move to Aston Villa will now quickly disappear.
As well as signing a new contract at the Emirates Stadium, which will be a massive boost for everyone associated with the club, Smith Rowe has also changed shirt numbers ahead of the 2021/22 campaign getting underway in a few weeks time, with Arsenal announcing that he will wear the No.10 shirt in the forthcoming season, meaning he will follow in the footsteps of some of the club’s most famous players in their history.
On landing the iconic No.10 shirt, Smith Rowe told Arsenal’s club website: “Everyone knows that No 10 is a big shirt and it is definitely a big position as well. So I’m buzzing to be honest, I can’t wait to get on the pitch,” Smith Rowe told Arsenal.com.
“It’s really special – I can’t explain the feeling when I found out. I’ve not really got the words to explain it right now! But yeah, I’m really happy.
“The legends that have played here and have worn the shirt… it’s a bit too much right now but I’m sure I will calm down after a while!
“When I was younger I used to watch Dennis Bergkamp, and when I was going through the academy Mesut Ozil was here as well and getting the opportunity to train with him and play with him as well was unbelievable.
“I just want to keep working hard and hopefully I can play like them and replicate what they’ve done.”
The fact that Smith Rowe has landed the No.10 shirt has gone down a treat with a number of Gunners supporters, with many of them delighted that the academy graduate has bagged one of the most iconic shirt numbers that football has to offer, with so many famous names having donned the No.10 shirt down the years.
Now that Smith Rowe has penned a new deal in north London and seen his shirt number changed, several Arsenal fans are hoping that the club will hand Brazilian sensation Gabriel Martinelli a new number as well.
Martinelli, currently away with the Brazil squad at the Olympic Games, wears the No.35 shirt at present, but several Arsenal fans are hoping that he will bag a more recognisable and favourable number ahead of the new campaign, with many hoping he claims the famous No.11 shirt.
Below, football.london has taken a close look at what some Gunners fans have had to say.
As you can see from the messages above, the overriding feeling is that many supporters hope to see Martinelli wear the No.11 shirt this season.
The club have not yet officially announced their new shirt numbers for this coming season, but a hint that Martinelli could be in line for a change did emerge last week.
That is because young centre-back Harry Clarke was spotted in training wearing a jumper with No.35 on it. Thus, some Gunners supporters felt that the Brazilian could be in line for a change.
However, it should be considered that the numbers worn in training sessions and in pre-season can differ from players’ confirmed squad numbers ahead of a new season, highlighting that this theory that Martinelli could be in line for a change and that Clarke is the new owner of the No.35 shirt should be taken with a pinch of salt and caution.
