Matteo Guendouzi aims sly dig at Arsenal fans as he opens up on Marseille transfer – Football.London

Matteo Guendouzi has admitted he enjoys “feeling the supporters’ love” from the Marseille fans in what seems like a dig at the Arsenal fan base.

The 22-year-old midfielder is on a season-long loan deal with the French club, after falling out of favour under Mikel Arteta following the defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion in the latter stages of the 2019/20 campaign.

Guendouzi was subsequently loaned out to German club Hertha Berlin last season, before departing the Gunners once again in the summer to join Marseille.

If Guendouzi does return to Arsenal at the end of the season, the Frenchman will only have 12 months remaining on his contract in north London and would likely be sold.

Now, the central midfielder has opened up on his loan move to Marseille and what convinced him to move to the Ligue 1 club, while also seemingly aiming a dig at Arsenal supporters.

Speaking to Onze Mondial, via the Express, Guendouzi said: “Before coming to Marseille, I had many options.

“Talking to president [Pablo] Longoria and coach [Jorge] Sampaoli was what convinced me. I immediately said, ‘I want OM’.

“First of all, Marseille is the biggest club in France. The club has won the Champions League; it has a great history. It has the most fervent support in the country.

“All of these aspects made my choice clearer. I like to play in a full stadium when I’m at home.

“I like feeling the supporters’ true love for the club. That’s what I’ve found here. I haven’t been this happy since the start of my career.”

It appears, judging by Guendouzi’s comments in November 2020, that his time under Arteta was not “fun” and he needed to depart from the Emirates Stadium.

“I needed to have fun on the pitch, to regain confidence and that’s what Hertha offers me. It really is a choice I made,” Guendouzi told Telefoot about his loan move to Hertha Berlin last season.

“In the space of two seasons I have played more than 80 games with Arsenal. When you play less, you start to think and it hurts.”

Guendouzi joined Arsenal in the summer of 2018 for around £7million from FC Lorient and despite impressing in his first season in north London, the midfielder failed to live up to his exciting potential during his time with the club.
