United have already splashed out £73million on forward Jadon Sancho and £42m on defender Raphael Varane, but Ferdinand thinks Ole Gunnar Solskjaer still needs more depth in his midfield.
Atletico Madrid star Niguez and Hammers’ man Rice have both been linked with a move to Old Trafford in the past and Ferdinand insisted both players would strengthen his former side.
Rio Ferdinand has urged Manchester United to strengthen their midfield before the end of the transfer window
Ferdinand believes Atletico Madrid’s Saul Niguez (left) and West Ham’s Declan Rice (right) would both improve his former team
‘I think if the right player becomes available for the right price, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will go and get him,’ Ferdinand said on his FIVE Youtube channel.
‘The problem is who is out there and who could be a good fit? Saul Niguez would be a perfect fit and he’s asking price was £160 million ($221m) a couple of years ago, now it’s more like £40-50m ($55-69m).
‘In today’s game that’s a decent price for someone like him who has Champions League experience. I’m a big fan of his. If you can get him in this window, I think you do it.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already signed Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane this summer
Speaking on his FIVE YouTube channel that Declan Rice would also be an astute addition
‘I think Declan Rice would be a massive addition to this squad. I’m a massive fan of his. I would love to see him keep progressing.
‘He was brilliant for England in the summer. I think if West Ham keep him they’ve done unbelievably well. I think he does well staying at West Ham or if he goes.’
Solskjaer said more signings would be a ‘bonus’ but didn’t rule out the possibility of further business.
‘I think anything from now is a bonus,’ Solskjaer told BT Sport after his side’s victory over Leeds on Saturday. ‘I can’t say we’re going to do more.
‘You never know in football, but that would be a bonus.’
Meanwhile, last week Gary Neville said United still need a centre forward and said the club should be going all-out to get Harry Kane.
‘I would want to see a centre forward,’ Neville said on Sky Bet’s The Overlap Live Fan Debate, when questioned about how United can further improve their team.
‘Chelsea have gone and bought (Romelu) Lukaku, City are after Kane and got (Jack) Grealish. We got (Jadon) Sancho and (Raphael) Varane and they are good signings but I don’t think it’s enough.
‘For me, I’d be going all-out to get Kane at Old Trafford. All-out. If City are going to buy Kane, why can’t we get Kane? We can compete.
‘Last year we said we needed a centre forward, a right winger and a centre back. if they got Sancho, Varane and Kane they would have a great chance.’
