‘Ozil prime!’ – Arsenal fans send same message to Martin Odegaard after what happened vs Leeds – Football.London

Some Arsenal supporters have been left in awe of Martin Odegaard following his assist to Emile Smith Rowe against Leeds United at Elland Road.

The Gunners have now extended their gap to West Ham United to four points following the victory over the Whites in Yorkshire, thanks to a fine first-half display.

Arsenal went into the half-time break 3-0 up after two goals from Gabriel Martinelli and one from Bukayo Saka effectively took the game beyond a highly disjointed Leeds team.

There was a glimmer of hope for the hosts when Raphinha scored from the penalty spot after Ben White fouled Joe Gelhardt inside the box.

However, substitute Smith Rowe was on hand to restore Arsenal’s three-goal advantage with just a few minutes of the clash remaining – but it was some fine work from Odegaard in the build-up that needs to be mentioned.

The Norway international, who has really shone in recent weeks for the Gunners, played a beautiful chipped through ball with the outside of his left foot to find Smith Rowe in space, with the England midfielder finishing emphatically.

Arsenal supporters, when taking to social media after Smith Rowe’s goal, were quick to praise Odegaard for his role, with quite a few making direct comparisons between the former Real Madrid man and former Gunners star Mesut Ozil.

Following the news that Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was stripped of his captaincy at Arsenal earlier in the week, Odegaard is one of numerous contenders to replace him as skipper, football.london understands.

The 23-year-old is already captain of the Norway national team and it’s clear to see that Mikel Arteta rates his leadership skills, when the Arsenal boss addressed the media on Friday.

He said this on Odegaard: “He is a natural leader. If you look for the perfect professional, he wouldn’t be very far from that. He is very, very young, but he already has a lot of experience in different clubs, in international football.

“I agree that in the last few weeks he is getting close to his best level. The ceiling for him, I do not know where it is with the talent that he has, the desire that he has, how much he wants to always improve and get better. We have got a tremendous player there.”

Odegaard is likely to be involved on Boxing Day when Arsenal take on Norwich City – although there are doubts whether the game will be given the go-ahead.

The Canaries had an outbreak of Covid-19 in their camp recently that forced the Premier League to postpone their clash with West Ham United this weekend.
