PSG’s raid on Lyon midfield threatens to end Arsenal’s Bruno Guimaraes hope – Football.London

The need for Arsenal to strengthen in midfield grows with each passing day as concern has increased with the imminent departure of Ainsley Maitland-Niles.

The England international joins Roma on a loan deal with no option but with an expectation, it could become a permanent sale in the summer. Arsenal then, with the African Cup of Nations absences of Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny, have just Granit Xhaka and Sambi Lokonga as senior orthodox options.

Links to central midfielders have been prevalent as Edu and Mikel Arteta look to find a solution to the lack of depth. Relying on youth players such as Charlie Patino or Tim Akinola for the long-term when the club has Champions league qualification ambitions is simply not sustainable.

One of the key targets has emerged as Lyon midfielder Bruno Guimaraes. Arsenal are said to hold a strong interest in the player who would cost a figure in the region of £38 million according to Globo via GFFN.

Transfer guru Nicolo Schira claims that Edu is a big fan of the 24-year-old and talks have been opened to try and sign him.

“Arsenal are really interested in Lyon midfielder Bruno Guimaraes. Edu loves him and has opened talks to try and sign him. Let’s see what happens. In the transfer market, all the players have a price,” he tweeted.

“It’s not a simple deal for Arsenal, but Edu is working and – if arrives an important bid – Aulas could sell Bruno Guimaraes.”

Lyon’s financial troubles, like many in the French topflight after the infamous television right controversy, were expected to be part of the reason for the openness of the club to sell the Brazilian.

However, their troubles may yet be eased as Ligue 1 table-toppers PSG are said to be interested in a deal for €60 million Lucas Paqueta.

Should the Parisians agree on a fee in this region, Lyon may no longer be as desperate for financial support and therefore the Gunners’ hopes of a Guimaraes move left in tatters.

Edu therefore should be encouraged to move quickly to agree on a deal with Lyon for Guimaraes before any external factors threaten to scupper a possible move.

A player of the midfielder’s quality would certainly be a huge boost, if signed, to Arsenal’s top-four hopes this season especially considering the thinness of the options in the position at present.
